New Donations to Westside Historical Society’s Collections
Highlight a Mardela Springs Family

Two recent donations from different donors have an interesting connection. From Donna Robinson Pappas comes this photograph of the Alonzo Green family, taken about 1905 we think.

Alonzo Green Family

The father Alonzo, seated was a Methodist minister well known in the area. His sons Alonzo and Leas are shown standing behind him. Leas, on the right followed in his father’s footsteps and also became a minister, and later a Bishop in the Methodist Conference. Alonzo stayed in Mardela Springs and worked at a local business in Salisbury. But he also was quite the artist, especially carving small birds and ducks. A collection of three of his mini-decoys was donated also by Claudia Hudson. They had been a gift to her late husband Paul from Alonzo. Interesting that these two donations should come almost together!
