A Brief History Of WestSide Historical Society ~~
Formed in 1985 by citizens of the western part of Wicomico County in an effort to preserve the historical knowledge, artifacts and material
culture of the area, the Society serves the lower Eastern Shore. The Society
received it articles of incorporation in 1985. We are recognized for federal
tax purposes as a 501c3 non-profit organization, and are a Registered Maryland Charity.
The focus of historical interest is on Wicomico County and the area around the Nanticoke River, originally identified as the voting
district of “Barren Creek .” Presently it encompasses the towns of Mardela
Springs, Athol, Riverton, San Domingo, Sharptown, and by extension, Vienna, Hebron and Quantico.
A broad cross-section of the population attend
events sponsored and produced by the Society, ranging from local school
children to farmers and watermen to artists to professionals such as teachers,
lawyers, and doctors, all sharing a concern for and dedication to the
preservation of the area’s history and culture.
We work with other historical and cultural
organizations locally and in the state, including the Adkins Historical Museum
& Comlplex in Mardela Springs, the Wicomico Preservation Trust,
Preservation Maryland, Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, Maryland
Humanities Council, and Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council. Students from Salisbury University and Mardela Middle and High School have worked as interns in the Barren Creek Heritage Center & Museum.
In 2006 WestSide Historical Society was awarded the
Heritage Award by the Lower Eastern Shore Heritage Council for outstanding work
in preservation of our history and culture.
Business meetings are held the third Monday of
each month, except in December, July, and August, and at different locations
around the area. |
