Welcome to Westside Historical Society’s Web site ~~

This website is an introduction to the cultural heritage of the northwestern corner of Wicomico County, Maryland, once known as Barren Creek District. Mardela Springs is the western “gateway” to the rich heritage of the lower Delmarva peninsula. Named Barren Creek Springs for almost 200 years, this is an historic town. The area was first settled in the late 17th century and many families living here now can easily trace their lineage back to those first settlers. From foodways to speech patterns to crafts and means of livelihood, the visitor can experience the rich history of these people. The serenity of the place, the quaint villages, the quite touch of undisturbed nature, all lie within minutes of a busy major highway cutting across the Peninsula and bound for the shores of the Atlantic. But stop awhile and explore the stories that await you here. Reflect on the values of America, seen and felt here in this lovely land.

Our Mission ~~

Westside Historical Society seeks to preserve the history and traditions of this part of the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland for future generations, and to promote an awareness and appreciation of the area's heritage.

We attempt to save and restore significant historical buildings or sites, artifacts, documents, records, photographs and art reflective of the history and culture, and coordinate preservation efforts with other local organizations.  We work with area youth and civic groups, publish local history monographs, and promote exhibits

A Brief History Of WestSide Historical Society ~~

Formed in 1985 by citizens of the western part of Wicomico County in an effort to preserve the historical knowledge, artifacts and material culture of the area, the Society serves the lower Eastern Shore. The Society received it articles of incorporation in 1985. We are recognized for federal tax purposes as a 501c3  non-profit organization, and are a Registered Maryland Charity.

The focus of historical interest is on Wicomico County and the area around the Nanticoke River, originally identified as the voting district of  “Barren Creek .”  Presently it encompasses the towns of Mardela Springs, Athol, Riverton, San Domingo, Sharptown, and by extension, Vienna, Hebron and Quantico.

A broad cross-section of the population attend events sponsored and produced by the Society, ranging from local school children to farmers and watermen to artists to professionals such as teachers, lawyers, and doctors, all sharing a concern for and dedication to the preservation of the area’s history and culture.

We work with other historical and cultural organizations locally and in the state, including the Adkins Historical Museum & Comlplex in Mardela Springs,  the Wicomico Preservation Trust, Preservation Maryland, Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, Maryland Humanities Council, and Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council. Students from Salisbury University and Mardela Middle and High School have worked as interns in the Barren Creek Heritage Center & Museum.

In 2006 WestSide Historical Society was awarded the Heritage Award by the Lower Eastern Shore Heritage Council for outstanding work in preservation of our history and culture.

Business meetings are held the third Monday of each month, except in December, July, and August, and at different locations around the area.
